The making of „Movin‘ On“ was inspired by the discovery of „The Cosimo Matassa Story“ (vol. 1&2), two four CD sets.
These boxes feature all the great R&B records engineered by Cosimo Matassa and recorded in his studio in New Orleans
between 1950 and 1961.
Together with old-timey blues songs, swing jazz and occasional originals drawn from the same sources, they paved the
road we’re travelling and movin’ on….
Part One
01 Cha Dooky-Doo (rec. Nov.11th 2014)
A song by Art Neville, recorded in 1958 at Cosimo Matassa’s , check out Art’s beautiful original version!
02 Beat Up Guitar (rec. Apr.6th 2015)
We came across Shemekia Copeland on Dr. John’s album “Ske-Dat-De-Dat /The Spirit of Satch.” We took this fine Blues
from her record “Wicked”.
03 Dance The Night Away With You (rec. Nov.8th 2014)
From Dr. John’s CD “City Lights”. This is one of the songs, we used to perform with our band “The X-perts”.
Since our Iidea for the duo was not to play stripped down versions of our old familiar repertoire, we had to find a solution
for using just guitar and mandolin.
We ended up with this, which is in fact a rehearsal demo we made sitting around one microphone.
Despite the rather vintage sound, we like the feel of it so much, that we put it on the CD. Hope you like it, too!
04 Movin’ On (rec. Apr.1st 2015)
Basically written by P’tit Loup, Movin’ On took a lot of reshaping over the last few years. This is where we’re at now.
05 The Girl With The Broken Heart (rec. Jan.25th 2015)
Slinky’s original, first recorded as a Swing Jazz tune including walking bass line, electric guitar and percussion;
we felt that this could take us away from the down home old- timey feeling we were striving for on this record. So we opted
for this take, which has a ragtime/bluegrass touch. The coda was recorded open air June 9th on a holiday near Amsterdam.
Part Two
06 Early In The Morning (rec. March 7th 2015)
We’ve always loved Louis Jordan but we were inspired by Cindy Lauper’s recording of the song on her album
“Memphis Blues”. One of the few songs, where we overdubbed some percussion, the other one being Cha Dooky-Doo.
07 Sweet Mama (rec. Feb. 2015)
An early Duke Ellington composition (1928). Slinky wrote some lyrics for P’tit Loup to sing on it.
08 You’re a No Good Man (rec. March 3rd 2015)
Another Slinky Williams original, who might that no good man be?
09 Danser Le Swing (rec. March 3rd 2015)
Originally written by our friend John Makin as “Full Swing”. The Manouche arrangement inspired Slinky to write some
French lyrics to it.
10 Tipitina (rec. April 3rd 2015)
Another one from “the Cosimo Matassa Story”, Professor Longhair’s piano classic arranged for 2 guitars including
some Dr. John licks in P’tit’s solos.
